Diane particularly likes our blue concrete pigment for use with mortar and grout. She writes, “it makes the design come alive. I am a huge advocate of your concrete pigment colors.

I not only use them myself in my ceramic tile installations, but I recommend them to all of my clients. I tell them the grout color can play an integral part in the overall design. They don’t have to use just one color, but two or more to create depth, or they can blend them to create a vast array of effects.”

Get Creative with Direct Colors Acid Stain!

The Teel family of Florida had a vision for their floors and after some hard work, they created a beautiful home and did it all themselves!

Mr. Teel began by troweling down a ¼ in. coat of DCI Smooth Gray Overlay. He applied the overlay with a 12” and 18” Magic Trowel – an excellent choice for smooth finished surfaces. DCI Concrete Overlay is specially formulated to produce a robust reaction with acid stain creating rich, vibrant colors every time.

After the overlay had cured, Mr. Teel applied Malayan Buff for the basecoat and accented the floor with Avocado and Azure Blue Acid Stains. Using the techniques of pouring the Azure Blue and Avocado directly on the floor and applying the stain with the sprayer nozzle very close to the surface, he was able to create a veined effect throughout the house. Mr. Teel also applied Azure Blue Deco Gel to fashion a circular free-hand design on the floor.

Applying Krystal Kote water-based concrete sealer

The Teel’s were looking for a glossy finish but didn’t want the strong odor of a solvent-based based sealer in their home so they selected the Krystal Kote High Gloss Water Based Sealer. Mr. Teel applied the sealer with 12” Padco Floor Coater and 10” Trim Pad for the hard to reach areas. To preserve the luster and shine of his sealed indoor surfaces, Teel waxed his floors with DCI Residential Floor Wax and Polish.

Direct Colors has taken special care in formulating products that professionals and homeowners alike can apply with equal success. We take great pride in presenting the Teel’s project to our customers and hope you too will be inspired to tackle your own decorative concrete project this year!

Enhancing the Appearance of Concrete Countertops with Decorative Aggregate

Decorative aggregate concrete countertopAdding either natural stone or glass aggregate to a polished countertop can enhance the overall appearance of any concrete countertop. Direct Colors offers both Size #1 (5mm-10mm) and Size #2 (10mm-15mm) aggregates in seven varieties. For pre-cast countertops, set up forms and trowel in a thin layer of countertop mix on the surface of the form. Broadcast the desired amount of aggregate onto the mix and press into place with a trowel or float. Apply an additional 1/4 in. of countertop mix, vibrate and add reinforcement.

After waiting for the necessary curing period, begin polishing with a 100-grit pad to expose the aggregate and continue working the surface with up to a 3000-grit pad for the smoothest possible appearance.

“Going for a Marbled Granite Look” with Direct Colors Concrete Acid Stains

“I recently stained the concrete on my back porch, which had been covered in green outdoor carpet for about 30 years. After much elbow grease and with the assist of your Bean-e-doo product, I was able to apply your Desert Amber, Cola, English Red, and Sea Grass concrete acid stains.

Good floor prep can’t be emphasized enough.  We had old astroturf glued to the concrete.  After several passes with a scraper, Bean-e-doo, and the use of a floor sander, the concrete was ready for stain.  This process was definitely more work and took twice as long, but would not have yielded our final result had it been skipped or abbreviated.

Desert Amber, Sea Grass, Cola, and English Red concrete acid stains with sprayable satin finish sealerA manageable sized section at a time was worked, blending the next section in as the work progressed.  All 4 colors were in their own sprayer and used concurrently.  First the concrete was dampened with water.  Then Desert Amber was used as a base color.  On top of that, Cola and English Red were applied making sure to duplicate the graining pattern like that in marble and always blending with the next section to continue the look.  Sea Grass was added as a highlighter to the pattern. Leaving areas with the Desert Amber exposed is important to the look. A good amount of all the colors was used, thoroughly saturating the concrete with the stain.  This ensures you get enough color down, and helps the colors flow better.  It’s not important to have an exact idea of how the whole project will look in the end, but you should have a general idea of how the graining pattern should flow.  It’s difficult to imagine the final version anyway, because the actual color of the stain is one color going on and turns to the final color later.  Desert Amber, Sea Grass, Cola, and English Red concrete acid stain with sprayable satin finish sealerOn this project, the porch was installed when the house was built and has a slight drain angle away from the foundation.  This was used to help determine which way the graining stripes should go and the overall pattern.  You can run water on the concrete and watch the flow pattern to decide how to use that to your advantage.  If you do this immediately before staining, you may have to squeegee off the excess water.  The final look is a sheer stain color as opposed to a painted look.  Any imperfections or major stains on the concrete might show through.  These things can be worked into the overall design, if needed.

I live in North Texas and did this in the early summer. Frank was such a great help in telling me the best time of day to apply the stain, neutralizer, and sealer. He also provided valuable information such as how long to leave the stain on before neutralizing and scrubbing off the excess.   I stored the unused stain in the original container.  One of the sprayers was rinsed out and used for the sealer.  Then that sprayer was discarded upon completion of sealer application.  I purchased the spike shoe covers as well.  Even though one section at a time was done, I still found myself having to step on a few spots where the stain was already applied.  This was done to position myself to continue the pattern, making sure to walk on the applied stain as little as possible. or wear acid stain resistant shoes.

I was going for a marble-granite look, and got it. Many thanks to the several conversations with your technician, Frank. I wanted you to see the results.”

Mountain Smoke Concrete Transforms Floor with DCI Concrete Dye

Story:

Jim with Mountain Smoke Concrete in TN was asked to design a black and white floor for a client.  After some discussion on the phone with our Direct Colors decorative concrete experts, Jim decided to try the DCI Concrete Dye because it would create the look his customer had specified.

DCI Concrete Before

For this slab, he applied Sprayable Satin Finish Sealer on the concrete before spraying on the acetone-based dye. The concrete sealer helps insure the best possible performance on a porous surface.

Jim said the application went great and he continues to receive many job referrals from his customer.

What can I do to hide the holes around the perimeter of my rooms after carpet has been removed?

Question:

I want to acid stain the floors in my house. What can I do to hide the holes around the perimeter of my rooms after carpet has been removed?

Answer:

Covering carpet tack holes can be difficult. Acid stain will react differently to the patching material than the actual slab itself which in most cases highlights the patch more than the floor. If you can’t live with the holes, consider applying a thin layer of DCI One-Step Overlay in the form of a border around the room. The overlay will cover the tack holes while producing an attractive outline for your floor. Even when using the same color of acid stain, a variation in color will occur. A border does involve extra work but the finished product is outstanding. Good luck!

Giving New Life to an Old Patio

Beverly P. has a great patio. There’s a hot tub, a pool, a grill, nice bar-height chairs, and a basset hound named Freddy, who thinks it’s all his. The problem is Mrs. Perry is planning a wedding to held in this outdoor entertainment area and the patio needs some sprucing up!

Before:

Concrete patio before it was coated with liquid colored antique

Beverly had previously used muriatic acid on the concrete so acid staining wasn’t an option. We recommended Liquid Colored Antique because the product is so easy to work with and still provides color variation on the surface. Beverly selected 623, a reddish-brown color, and 844, a medium brown, to complement her brick work. She sealed the concrete with Sprayable Satin Finish Sealer and the difference is amazing.

“I love the patio. It is gorgeous. We could not have done this without your help.”
