Acid Stain Project Checklist

Planning your Next Acid Stain Project

Use the Acid Stain Project Checklist to determine what products you’ll need for your next DIY project. Keep in mind that concrete texture, porosity and conditions will effect the amount of stain and sealer needed to complete the job. Rougher, more porous concrete MAY require more than the recommended amount of acid stain and concrete sealer so use this checklist as a guide rather than the final word on your project needs.

Keep in mind that it is your responsibility, as the stain applicator, to make sure the slab is ready to accept the stain, whether you poured the concrete or not. Take the time to look at the batch tickets to see what’s in the concrete mix, and always do a sample prior to stain installation to ensure that the color is correct.

Concrete Acid Stain: Depending on surface conditions, the coverage rate is 200 sq. ft. per gallon applying two coats (more acid stain will be needed if additional color accents are desired) Older concrete may require more stain and longer activation times to achieve a darker coloration.

Concrete Sealer: Varies by Sealer Choice and Concrete Surface Conditions
Decide what level of gloss – satin finish, semi-gloss or high gloss – and variety of sealer (solvent or water-based) is appropriate for your project. Sprayable Satin Finish and AC1315 High Gloss cover approximately 200 sq. ft. per gallon. Krystal Kote has a coverage rate of 350 sq. ft./gallon and DCI Lithium Hardener/Sealer has a coverage rate of 400 sq. ft/gallon. The Polyurethane and Modified Acrylic Urethane sealers will cover 300 sq. ft. per kit while the Polyurea covers approximately 275 sq. ft. per gallon.  Coverage rates will vary depending on the conditions of the concrete.

Floor Wax: 1000 sq. ft. per gallon (indoor projects only). Select Commercial Wax for business and high traffic areas. Residential Wax is intended for home applications. Though wax could be applied if desired, Penetrating Lithium Hardener, 550 Water Based Polyurethane, Polyurea and 777 Modified Acrylic Urethane Sealers do not require a concrete wax coating.

Applicators: An all-plastic Pump-up Sprayer is used to apply acid stain. Acid Stain Resistant Shoes will allow you to walk on the floor while the stain is still wet and active. Sealer can be applied with the Padco Applicator of your choice or in the case of the Sprayable Satin Finish Sealer, a pump-up fence and deck sprayer. Concrete Floor Wax and Polish can be applied with a Padco Floor Coater, Trim Pad or a sponge mop.

*For machine-troweled or “burned in” surfaces, use DCI Hard-Troweled Floor Prep to prepare the floor for acid staining. Contact our decorative concrete specialists for more information about your specific project.
