Sealing the Surface of Your Concrete
Direct Colors offers both solvent and water-based sealers suitable for any concrete project. Sealers can be applied with either an applicator or sprayer; however, some solvent-based sealers cannot be used in all US States.
The method used to apply sealer depends on the type of surface and the variety of sealer used. Our solvent-based non-sprayable sealer can be used in the most states and are appropriate for both indoor & outdoor applications; however, we recommend using a water-based sealer for occupied indoor applications and for basements. Use caution in applying solvent-based sealers, particularly during indoor applications.

Use caution when applying a solvent-based sealers indoors. Solvent-based sealers have a strong chemical odor. Wear a mask or ventilator while applying the sealer and make certain the area is well ventilated to the outside during as well as after the application. Customers with machine troweled, ground, or smooth hand-troweled floors should apply sealers in the following manner for best results:
-
CS-309 Semi-Gloss Solvent-Based or AC 1315 High Gloss Tinted Sealers should be applied with a Padco Floor Coater.
-
DCI’s Tinted Sprayable Satin Finish Sealer (SSB) is a solvent-based sealer and is the ONLY sealer recommended for use with a sprayer. SSB should be applied with a pump-up deck sprayer with a fine spray tip. One coat of SSB will produce a satin finish. The finish will become glossier in in appearance as you apply additional coats of sealer. Two thin coats are recommended for enhanced durability on outdoor surfaces. The sealer can be applied with applicator if desired.
-
All Tinted Water-Based Sealers should be applied with a Padco coater or a long-handled paint pad.
-
DO NOT apply Water-Based Sealer if the surface temperature is under 60°F.
Textured or broom finished surfaces sealed with a non-sprayable solvent and water-based sealers should be rolled on using a short-nap roller (approximately 3/8″) or less. For best results with a roller, use the pan grid to purge the roller of all excess sealer and apply with slow, even strokes. Sealer bubbles, should they occur, can be removed with a hair dryer set to cool or a clean leaf blower set to low speed. SSB can be either sprayed or rolled on a textured/broom finished surface.
Shake all DCI Tinted Concrete Sealer products well before and during use to insure an even distribution of pigment in the solution.
Generally, the thinner the application, the stronger and more durable the sealer will become. Applying a thick coat will result in an inconsistent finish with tacky areas that may not set-up correctly. Allow solvent-based sealers to dry for AT LEAST4-6 hours between coats. Water-based sealers should be given at a minimum 24 hours to set-up between coats. If you live in a humid climate or the weather conditions are damp and overcast, give the surface additional time to dry. DO NOT walk on wet sealer as it will leave permanent impressions on your surface. Cover your feet with plastic bags to protect your floor’s finish during application.
All indoor applications of DCI Tinted Concrete Sealer require either a commercial or residential wax to protect your sealer from daily wear and tear. All DCI Concrete Wax and Floor Polish products are water- based and should be applied using a mop with a hand wringer or the Padco Applicator of your choice. Commercial wax intended for business use or homes with indoor dogs can be buffed after the initial application.
