550 Water Based Polyurethane Concrete Sealer is a protective glossy finish, two-component urethane resin. The Part A component must be thoroughly mixed into the Part B component for the material to properly cure and provide a durable, long-lasting finish. This product can be applied indoors or out to smooth concrete surfaces. Rough or broom-finished concrete are not good candidates for this sealer. Careful review of the product instructions prior to applying is a must. Glossy, no wax sealer alternative for indoor floors.
Coverage: When properly applied to a smooth concrete surface, the 1 gallon kit will cover up to 300 sq. ft. Coverage will vary with surface conditions and concrete porosity. If top-coating a previously sealed surface, the kit will cover up to 500 sq. ft. Use only water-based acrylic or epoxy sealers to prime the floor. For best results, apply sealer at temperatures between 60°F-95°F and when the relative humidity is 80% or less. The sealer itself must be above 60°F before installing.
Mixing Instructions: As a two-part system, Part A must be thoroughly mixed into Part B in order for the material to properly set up for application. Pour Part A into Part B and begin to mix with a wooden stir stick. Mix completely; fold the material over onto itself and carefully scrape the sides of the can to assure nothing is left unmixed. Whenever possible mix contents with a low speed electric drill with a paint mixing paddle attachment. The contents should thicken and become whiter as you stir. Stir for 2-4 minutes until totally combined. NEVER mix the product at a high-speed. Once mixed, the pot life for the sealer is approximately 1 hour.
Floor Application: Use a piece of packing or duct tape to “de-fuzz” the roller prior to application. After the sealer has been thoroughly mixed, pour the polyurethane in a thick ribbon directly onto the floor and begin pulling the sealer across the floor using a 5 mil squeegee allowing the tool to set the appropriate depth. Wet a 3/8” nap roller with sealer and gently back roll the polyurethane into place on the floor. Avoid overworking the sealer as it can lead to air entrapment which can cause foaming on the surface. Working time for the 550 Water Based Polyurethane Sealer is once on the floor is only 5-8 minutes so having more than one person mixing, pouring and applying is essential for larger projects. If a second coat should be deemed necessary, apply within 24 hours of the first coat or wet-sand the surface with a 120-grit pad prior application to ensure good adhesion. If applying with an HVLP sprayer, spray on in even coats until the surface is saturated and allow to dry.
Please see our How-to Apply Water Based Polyurethane Guide for complete application instructions. Kits include option to purchase 12″ squeegee.
Countertop Application: Use a piece of packing or duct tape to “de-fuzz” the 3/8” nap roller prior to application. Pour a small amount of sealer onto the countertop surface careful to avoid dripping sealer over the edges. Using a 5 mil notched squeegee begin to gauge an even coat depth by pulling the squeegee across the face of the countertop. Pour more sealer as needed to cover and gauge the entire surface. With the handheld roller, gently roll the sealer into place against the squeegee application lines. Roll again in the opposite direction. Carefully wet the roller with sealer and apply along the edges without dripping or overlapping the countertop face. Do not attempt a second wet coat as this can lead to overworking and foaming. Working time for this material is 5-8 minutes after pouring the sealer on the countertop. Applying beyond the recommended working time can result in streaking, a milky appearance and/or an uneven finish.
If a second coat should be deemed necessary, apply within 24 hours of the first coat or wet-sand the surface with a 600 grit pad prior application to ensure good adhesion. Surfaces sealed with 550 should cure for 12 hours at approximately 75°F before use. Allow for additional drying time if high humidity is a factor. 550 Water-Based Polyurethane Sealer can also be applied with HVLP Gravity Feed Spray Gun for finer finish. Dilute sealer by 25% with water and spray. Compressed air required.
550 Water Based Polyurethane Concrete Sealer can be cleaned prior to cure with isopropyl alcohol and can only be removed from fully-cured concrete surfaces using Soy Gel Paint and Sealer Stripper or by mechanical means, such as grinding or sanding. Leftover product, brushes, paint trays, or roller covers should be responsibly discarded after use.
