What is Acid Stain

Acid Stain is a coloring process involving a chemical reaction on a cement surface. This process is used to add a decorative touch of color and depth to existing concrete.

Direct Colors manufactures many of our products at our facility in Shawnee, Oklahoma, including acid stain, sealer, overlay, antique release and several others. By manufacturing our own acid stain we can insure their quality, offer some customization and sell them to our customers at the most affordable prices.

How Does Acid Stain Work?

Acid stain is a solution made with water, hydrochloric acid, and acid-soluble metallic salts that react with minerals already present in the concrete. The result of this reaction is beautifully colored concrete that works very well on concrete, new or old concrete. It can also be used for equally impressive results on decorative cement or concrete overlays and self-levelers. The acid in the stain lightly etches the surface of the concrete, which allows the metallic salts to penetrate more easily. Once the stain reacts, it becomes a permanent part of the concrete and won’t fade, chip off, or peel away. Like stains made for wood, acid-based stains are translucent and the color they produce will vary depending on the color and condition of the surface they are applied to. Each cement slab will react to the stain in varying degrees of intensity, creating natural color variations that bring character and distinction to each project.

Why us Acid Stain?

Acid stain has become increasingly popular over the last several years. Homeowners, designers and builders are drawn to stained concrete because of the unique results you can achieve with each project by combining colors and application. It is a beautiful and affordable option for do it yourself homeowners who want to make their home even more beautiful on a budget.

Acid Staining is perfect for creating a seamless, natural marble like look out of simple concrete. It creates beautiful colors, mostly earth tones like browns, reddish browns and greens. You can also create your own custom color by mixing and matching your favorite colors, or applying them at different rates. Never expect Acid Stain to be uniform or have an even tone, you’ll get different reactions from slab to slab which gives the finished product depth and character.

Acid Stain can be applied to sidewalks, entrances, driveways, living rooms, bathrooms, patios, countertops, high traffic areas and virtually any cement or concrete surface that needs a fresh look.
