Our decorative concrete technicians often receive questions from DIYer’s about the best way to apply acid stain for indoor floor projects. While we do offer specific acid stain application recommendations, we always point out there is no one correct way. For sure the stain should never be applied using a nap roller but beyond that customers can really do whatever they wish. Acid stain can be sprayed, brushed on with a foam brush, poured on in a diluted wash, puddled, sprinkled, flicked on and the list continues. Our acid stain colors offer creative and functional versatility for almost any concrete project. Have a challenging vertical application? Consider our Deco Gel Acid Stain Gel. It’s great for walls, steps and other surfaces where drips and runs might be a problem.
Mary B. of Trinidad, CO submitted photos of her acid stained floor artistry for our 2014 End of Summer Photo Contest. What makes her floors so special is the way she’s made the home her own through creatively “stamping” and staining the concrete. Each room as a different yet complementary theme creating a warm and inviting space. No doubt the floors are quite the conversation piece! We hope you’ll enjoy Mary’s project as much as we have.
“I was fortunate enough to be here when the slab was poured. After it was finished, but still wet, I pressed some grasses and some sunflowers into the wet cement. I even had my dogs run around on the wet cement, leaving shallow paw prints. It all looks so great on my floor!”
“But for the staining, I had 3 garden sprayers, one with Azure, one with Cola and one with Malayan Buff. I first intended to cover most of the floor with the Malayan Buff, but then highlight with the other colors. I started with the master bath, master bedroom and kitchen. But once I neutralized the acid stain, I saw how, when a lot of stain was applied it puddled and created a watercolor effect. So I started using more of the Azure in larger spots on its own for the rest of the house. There was no plan — I just sprayed away, alternating colors. I even took the leftover colors from my samples I purchased, and literally threw them here and there in a room.”
“I am a watercolor artist. I really love the watercolor effect this gave me.”
“Then, once the acid was dry, I took a turkey feather and painted some grasses onto my floor. Neutralized everything, then went with the high gloss AC1315. It is beautiful!”
“Just wanted to thank you. Great website, great products. Lots of information to let the homeowner know the how & why of your product. I can’t say it was easy, but look at the results! My new straw bale home was made even better with my new, acid stained floors! Thank you!”
