Patios are our #1 project at Direct Colors. We speak to more customers wanting to restore color and shine to an existing slab more than almost anything else. Liquid Colored Antique is our more popular product for patio renovation and Heather from Denver, CO would certainly agree. Here’s her story told in her own words….
Heather called us with a difficult patio renovation problem. She didn’t like how her concrete pool deck had been colored and her contractor couldn’t fix it. What else could be done??? She sent over the pictures and we had to admit it looked pretty bad. Hard to imagine how the dark stripe down the middle of the patio improved the overall concrete appearance but we thought we had a solution.
The pool deck was originally integrally colored with a heavy broom finish texture; maybe a little too heavy from Heather’s point of view and the color was too light. She’d contracted for a terra cotta or Sante Fe color and got a pinkish orange instead.
“Because the color in the concrete was mixed at different times, the contractor left three unsightly seams that did not match up in texture or in color.”
In comes the tinted concrete sealer…
“The contractor mixed in some red powdered pigment into the concrete sealant in hopes that it would hide the seams however it did not and it was much worse as the early photos show. The contractor did not have a solution to correct his error and did not want to try to fix it (and was dismissed). No other contractors would assist me with a solution locally. I was told there was no product which could go over the concrete sealant. However, I’m pretty handy and felt there must be a fix or at least a way to stain the whole area to match the problem seams and make it disappear.”
Shortly after we received the call…
“I researched concrete stains on the internet, found your company and called you!”
The solution though not much fun, was relatively inexpensive and did not require a professional to accomplish…
“We looked at the photos of the red seam and I was instructed to purchase Xylene at my hardware store to remove the unsightly color. Using a 3/8″ nap paint roller with a solvent resistant core, I rolled the Xylene on the tinted sealer several times to remove it. Wearing heavy-duty gloves, I used 20 rags to pull up the red color and the xylene stripper after rolling.”
Once the repair was successfully completed, what’s next?
“I asked about adding more color depth to the whole project. With your help, I chose your Russet Liquid Colored Antique product which is a terra-cotta color. I applied the Liquid Colored Antique ALL over the pool surround to blend and hide the seams (which were so much better after I stripped out the stain he put on) and also to give color depth to the concrete; make it richer, more natural looking, and less pink!”
In the end…
“Success!! It is wonderful, a rich deep terra-cotta color that looks like a square in old Santa Fe and the fix was pretty easy to do (I’m 65 years and I did it myself)! I only had to purchase a fence and deck sprayer for the antiquing application, and I then I resealed the whole surround myself using the paint rollers and metal trays.”
“Proof is in the photos…we love it! Thanks for everything!”
Liquid Colored Antique Concrete Stain can be used to restore faded stained or integrally-colored outdoor concrete and can be applied directly on top of an existing sealer. On smooth surfaces, the pigment will collect where you spray it most heavily. On stamped or textured surfaces, the pigment will flow to the lowest part of the impression, adding natural looking highlights. The liquid vehicle evaporates, leaving the pigment to shadow or accent the surface. 5 gallons will cover approximately 1000 sq. ft. depending on surface texture, porosity and existing color.
Sprayable Satin Finish Concrete Sealer (SSB) is an acrylic xylene-based product designed to provide a satin gloss shine for any exterior or interior concrete surface. SSB can be used indoors but should only be applied in spaces well-ventilated to the outside. Preferred choice for exterior concrete and garage floor applications where slip hazards might be a concern. Sprayable Satin Finish is also available in over 40 colors and is the first choice for sealing Liquid Colored Antique Concrete Stain applications. 5 gallons will cover approximately 1000 sq. ft. depending on surface texture, porosity and existing color.
